Seeking the best small towns in Boulder County
Suburban and small-town living has plenty to offer, and Colorado and Boulder County offer some exceptional choices.
In fact, Colorado is home to 10 of the nation’s best small towns, and four are in or near Boulder County, according to WalletHub’s Best and Worst Small Cities report.
That’s good news for the nearly half of Americans who say they would prefer to live in the suburbs, compared to 24% for urban areas and 23% for rural communities, according to a 2024 public opinion poll by research firm Ipsos.
WalletHub points out that small cities often provide “more wiggle room, fewer degrees of separation, and shorter commutes.”
But one perk stands above the rest for many homebuyers: Affordability — the ultimate challenge for today’s housing market.
A striking example of the cost difference between large cities and smaller communities comes from an analysis by the Economic Policy Institute. A California study found that the cost of living for a family with two parents and two children would total $8,103 per month in Hanford, compared with $17,621 per month in San Francisco.
What makes a small city stand out?
“The best small cities offer strong job markets, high-quality education, good health care, safe living conditions, and plenty of local flair to help you achieve a high quality of life,” notes WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo.
To identify the top locations, WalletHub evaluated cities with populations of 25,000 to 100,000, analyzing 45 key indicators across five categories: affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life, and safety. The findings were ranked, with the 99th percentile representing the top 1% of small cities in America.

Several popular Boulder County cities with populations outside of the study criteria were not included in the report, including Louisville, Superior, Erie and Boulder.
Though these cities have received recognition in other rankings. For example, Niche.com ranked Louisville as the No. 1 best place to live in Boulder County, followed by Superior at No. 2 and Boulder at No. 3. Erie ranked as the best place to live in Weld County.
